£7,500 award for fall in supermarket

A 34-year-old woman has been awarded £7,500 compensation after falling in a supermarket.

She had been shopping when she slipped on water that had leaked from one of the fridges.

She fell to the floor and sustained soft tissue injuries to her right knee and left foot. She found it difficult to stand for long periods or walk up and down the stairs. It was expected that it would take nearly two years for the injuries to heal.

She brought an action against the supermarket saying that they had been negligent in allowing a hazard to shoppers to be present and failing to put up any warning signs.

The supermarket denied liability but agreed to an out-of-court settlement of £7,500 to cover pain, suffering and loss of amenity.
