Change of Name

There are many reasons why you might decide to change your name, including:

  • Being unhappy with your current name
  • Divorce or separation
  • Marriage
  • To allow you to have the same surname as your child

How do I change my name?

At Andersons Solicitors our specialist family lawyers can advise you about the best way to make the change. We can provide you with a Change of Name Deed. This is a formal document which proves that you have changed your name. The Change of Name Deed will provide you with the ability to amend documents such as your passport, driving licence and medical records as it will be accepted by all official organisations as evidence of your change of name. As soon as you’ve signed your Change of Name Deed you can start using your new name. A Change of Name Deed does not allow you to change the name on your birth certificate.

I changed my name some time ago and have lost the paperwork, what can I do?

Our specialist team can discuss with you how best to deal with this situation and draft the documents necessary to enable you to show how your change of name has occurred and permit the change to be made to your passport etc.

My birth certificate shows one surname but I’ve always used another…

... and I’m having difficulty in obtaining a passport. Our specialist family lawyers can provide you with an individually tailored document to overcome the difficulties to which this situation can give rise.

Changing your name is easy as long as you are over the age of 18 and Andersons Solicitors are here to help you every step of the way.
