Children stressed by parents’ Christmas feuding
Divorced and separated couples are being urged to lay their differences aside for the sake of their children this
Christmas. The festive season is supposed to be a magical time for kids but according to family
law specialist Sarah
Perkins it can all too easily be spoilt by disputes between their estranged parents. Miss
Perkins, of Andersons Solicitors
in Nottingham, says the most common dispute is over
where the children will spend Christmas Day. “Most couples manage to come to amicable agreements but some find it more difficult and then it’s the children who suffer
as they find themselves at the centre of a tug of war between mum and dad. It can be very stressful for them. “ “It’s not unusual for lingering
resentment between separated couples to come to the fore at this time of year.
“Fathers who don’t see their children very often throughout the year want to make up for it at Christmas
when they’re off work, but mothers can resent handing the children over and such a special time.”
Miss Perkins, who’s a member of the Law
Society Family Law Panel, urges parents to compromise for the sake of their children. If this is not possible then one may have to resort to start legal proceedings in order to
be granted access. |
